The Transition from Sr. KG to 1st Standard — What Parents Should Know
The jump from kindergarten to Standard 1 can be scary — for kids AND parents. Here's how VH School makes it smooth, and how you can support your child at home.
What Actually Changes?
In India, the move from Sr. KG to Standard 1 is often dramatic. Kids go from two hours of play-based fun to six hours of structured classes. Uniforms, homework, exams — all new.
At VH School, we deliberately soften this shift. But even with the best transition, a few things do change:
- Longer school day (from ~3 hours to ~6)
- More seated, focused work
- Structured subjects: English, Maths, EVS, Hindi, Marathi
- Homework begins (light, in our case)
- Continuous assessment (no hard exams in 1st Std, but evaluations are continuous)
What Stays the Same (at VH School)
This is where continuity matters. When a child transitions within VH School from Sr. KG to 1st Std:
- Same campus, same familiar faces
- Many of the same teachers (and if not, teachers who know them)
- Same friends in class
- Same values — personalized care, activity-based learning, warmth
- Same monthly assemblies, puppet theatre, colour days, and events
This is the single biggest advantage of staying with VH. No new school. No new rules. No new friends to make from scratch.
3 Ways to Prepare at Home
1. Build routines before school starts
In the weeks leading up to 1st Std, start a consistent morning and bedtime routine. Wake up, brush, breakfast, dress — same order every day. The predictability calms anxiety.
2. Read together, daily
Just 15 minutes of reading aloud each evening does more for 1st Std readiness than any drill. Your child learns vocabulary, story structure, focus, and the idea that reading is something families do together.
3. Talk about feelings, not just facts
Kids often can't articulate "I'm nervous about 1st Standard." They act out or regress instead. Ask open questions: "What part of the new class do you think will be fun? What part seems tricky?" Listen. Don't fix. Just listen.
Signs to Watch For
Most children adapt within 2-3 weeks. If you see persistent tummy aches, sleep regression, or tears past 4 weeks, talk to your teacher and our principal. We can usually spot and solve small issues before they become big ones.
The Long View
Your child will make this transition. Millions of children do it every year. With a school that takes the transition seriously (like VH), and parents who stay steady (like you), it becomes another step in a long, joyful learning journey — not a cliff to jump off.
